Agentic commerce for every developer: The Spring '26 Edition
Shopify opens agentic commerce infrastructure to all developers via Universal Commerce Protocol and Catalog API, removing approval requirements and enabling end-to-end AI-driven shopping experiences.
The useful question is what changes for users, developers or buyers, and whether the announcement stays industry context or becomes something people can actually use.
Shopify has made its agentic commerce infrastructure available to all developers without requiring prior approval. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard for AI agent transactions, now allows developers to register agent profiles via the Developer Dashboard and build end-to-end experiences from product search to checkout using the public MCP endpoint. The UCP was co-developed with Google and is supported by major industry partners including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Stripe. Developers can access millions of Shopify merchants' product catalogs through standardized, queryable data structures designed for AI agents.
The Catalog API has been opened to developers with just an API key, eliminating the need for approval. It now supports advanced search capabilities such as image and multi-modal queries, as well as a lookup endpoint that resolves product URLs into accurate catalog matches. The API provides richer metadata like size, color, and delivery estimates, improving product presentation accuracy. Shopify reports that AI searches powered by its Catalog API convert at twice the rate of those using scraped data. Developers can also integrate Shop sign-in, allowing shoppers to connect their Shop accounts and retain saved details across experiences.
Developers can now build Sidekick App Extensions, enabling their apps to surface data and actions directly within Sidekick conversations. Data extensions allow Sidekick to display partner app information in response to merchant queries, while action extensions let merchants perform tasks without leaving the conversation. The feature launches with over 15 partners, including Klaviyo, Loop, and Smile. Any developer in Shopify’s ecosystem can now create extensions, integrating their tools into the merchant workflow within Sidekick.
The Shopify AI Toolkit has reached general availability, offering developers a plugin for editors like Cursor, VS Code, and Claude Code. The toolkit provides direct access to Shopify’s reference guides, live store data, and admin tools, auto-filling data structures and catching errors during development. It bundles skills and the Shopify CLI, enabling token-efficient development and serverless app deployment. Shopify handles hosting, authentication, and UI components, while static apps can leverage metaobjects and metafields for merchant data storage. The updates aim to reduce development time and costs for agencies building merchant-facing apps.
