Transaction finality determines whether an institution can treat a blockchain payment as settled and irreversible. On probabilistic chains, institutions must wait through multiple confirmations to approximate finality, adding latency. Sui provides deterministic finality, settling transactions in roughly 390 milliseconds, which allows automated processes to treat payments as final without manual monitoring. This speed enables real-time applications such as point-of-sale payments and high-frequency market-making strategies that cannot tolerate multi-second waits.

Sui’s average transaction cost remains under $0.02, and stablecoin transfers are gasless, making high-volume settlement economical. Benchmark testing shows a theoretical peak of around 297,000 commands per second, though this is a testing ceiling rather than observed mainnet throughput. These cost and speed characteristics support scalable institutional use cases without congestion pricing during demand spikes.

Two architectural choices drive Sui’s speed and scalability. The Mysticeti consensus protocol, running on a DAG, allows validators to propose and certify blocks in parallel. Transactions involving only owned objects, such as token transfers, take a fast path that finalizes them without full consensus. The Mysticeti v2 upgrade further reduced latency by integrating validation into consensus and introducing a streamlined submission path called the Transaction Driver.

For institutional deployment, Sui also addresses privacy and product readiness. Confidential transfers, currently in beta on devnet, keep transaction amounts private while allowing regulators or auditors to access details when required. Institutional products include Sui Dollar, a native stablecoin issued by Bridge, and the upcoming Hashi protocol for Bitcoin in DeFi, which aims to enable yield generation without taxable events or custodial trust assumptions.
