UC Berkeley announces new professional graduate degree in AI and machine learning
UC Berkeley will launch a Master of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in fall 2027, accepting applications from September 24, 2026. The two-semester program focuses on core AI and machine learning principles, ethics, and practical deployment.
The University of California, Berkeley announced a new professional graduate degree, the Master of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (MAIML), set to begin in fall 2027. The program is designed for STEM graduates and will be delivered in person over two semesters at the Berkeley campus. It emphasizes computational and statistical foundations of AI and machine learning, preparing students to develop, deploy, and apply advanced systems responsibly.
The MAIML program is offered by UC Berkeley’s College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) and taught by faculty from the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) and Statistics. The curriculum includes core coursework in data science, machine learning, probability, statistical inference, and AI ethics. Students will also participate in a Silicon Valley immersion experience between semesters to gain practical industry exposure.
To complete the degree, students must fulfill all required coursework and pass a comprehensive examination. The program aims to equip graduates with the skills to lead in AI innovation and address ethical considerations in technology development. Applications will open on September 24, 2026, with the first cohort starting in fall 2027.
UC Berkeley will host information sessions for prospective students on September 15 (online) and September 24 (in person on campus). Jennifer Chayes, dean of CDSS, stated that the program provides a rigorous training opportunity within an ecosystem focused on transformative technology development.
