Robert Cole, who led Cal Performances from 1986 to 2009, transformed the organization from a modest regional presenter into an internationally acclaimed arts institution. During his tenure, annual performances increased from 45 to 130, with ticket sales growing more than tenfold and the budget tripling. Cole’s approach emphasized artistic risk and long-term partnerships with performers, including collaborations with Mark Morris Dance Group and commissions of works by John Adams and Philip Glass.

Cole expanded Cal Performances’ reach by bringing world-renowned artists and companies to Berkeley, including the Bolshoi Ballet, Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal, and Yo-Yo Ma’s Silkroad Ensemble. He also founded the Berkeley Festival & Exhibition in 1990 and Berkeley Edge Fest in 2003, establishing Berkeley as a global destination for early and contemporary music. His programming reflected a commitment to diverse artistic traditions, from ancient to contemporary.

Beyond performances, Cole prioritized arts education, launching initiatives like Berkeley/Oakland AileyCamp and expanding school programs to over 100 annually. He also managed UC Berkeley’s Student Musical Activities, overseeing groups such as the Cal Band and UC Jazz Ensemble. His work bridged the university and community, integrating arts into campus life and public engagement.

Cole received numerous honors, including the Berkeley Citation in 1997 and France’s Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1995. He is survived by his family, and Cal Performances honors his legacy as a visionary leader who elevated the organization’s profile and impact.
