British companies to access prized Ukraine data to develop AI drone swarms
UK firms will access Ukraine’s battlefield AI drone data to develop new models for autonomous swarms, aiming to enhance defence capabilities and national security.
The UK Government announced British companies will gain access to Ukraine’s extensive battlefield data for the first time to develop AI models for advanced drone swarms. The database, containing imagery and video from uncrewed aerial systems, will be available to up to 12 UK firms under an inaugural competition. This initiative aims to accelerate the creation of AI-driven drone technologies that could improve supply delivery, targeting, and autonomous operations for UK forces. The move follows a landmark agreement between Prime Minister Andy Burnham and President Zelenskyy in Kyiv.
The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is inviting UK companies to submit proposals for using the data to develop AI models for next-generation battlefield drones. Selected companies will be chosen within weeks, with data exploitation expected to begin shortly after. The competition is part of the UK-Ukraine AI Partnership and focuses on creating models resilient to degraded communications or satellite navigation loss. Drone swarms, capable of autonomous flight, swimming, or driving, will use AI to coordinate, identify threats, and make decisions with human oversight.
The initiative is led by the MOD’s Taskforce RAID, which aims to equip UK forces with smarter technologies for better decision-making and reduced risk. The database includes over 6 million detections of objects such as tanks, artillery, air defence systems, infantry, and aerial targets, including Shahed drones. Access will initially be granted to up to 12 UK companies, with proposals required to meet both Ukrainian and British defence needs. The work aligns with the UK’s ambitions to strengthen national security and support allies while fostering domestic defence innovation.
The announcement follows the Prime Minister’s discussions at the UN General Assembly on global AI collaboration, including a new UK-US AI and Autonomy partnership. The UK-Ukraine agreement underscores the countries’ 100 Year Partnership, reinforcing joint efforts to enhance global security and Ukraine’s defensive capabilities against Russia’s invasion. The initiative reflects the Prime Minister’s AI Taskforce’s goal of turning government AI ambitions into practical defence capabilities.
