Businesses set to be protected from Argentinian economic coercion
The UK will introduce measures under the Protection of Trading Interests legislation to shield businesses operating in the Falkland Islands from Argentinian economic coercion.
The UK Government announced plans to implement measures under the Protection of Trading Interests (PTI) legislation, aiming to protect businesses investing in the Falkland Islands from Argentinian domestic measures that target lawful economic activity. These measures will prevent UK companies and individuals from being compelled to comply with extraterritorial Argentinian laws affecting the Falklands. The Government emphasized that the steps are not intended to restrict commercial activity with Argentina but to safeguard legitimate operations connected to the Falkland Islands. Affected businesses will receive close engagement and support from the UK Government throughout the process.
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband stated that the UK’s support for the Falkland Islands remains steadfast, condemning Argentina’s attempts to intimidate businesses engaged in legitimate commercial activity. He reaffirmed that companies should operate without political coercion and that the UK will defend the Falkland Islanders’ right to pursue economic development. The announcement signals the Government’s commitment to taking concrete action against coercive measures targeting lawful activity in the Falklands.
The measures will specifically target Argentinian extraterritorial legislation that seeks to impede commercial decisions in the Falkland Islands. The UK Government will introduce secondary legislation promptly, with the aim of bringing it into force before the end of the year. These steps are designed to ensure that UK businesses and individuals can continue making commercial choices in accordance with UK law without interference.
The UK Government also reiterated its support for the Falkland Islands Government and the Falkland Islanders’ right to determine their own economic future. Decisions on resource development in the Falklands will remain with local authorities and involved companies. The announcement underscores the UK’s resolve to protect its interests and uphold the autonomy of the Falkland Islands in matters of economic activity.
