E5 Defence Ministers' Statement: 26 October 2026
Defence ministers from France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the UK reaffirm Russia as the primary threat to Euro-Atlantic security and outline plans to strengthen NATO through coordinated military and industrial efforts.
The E5 Defence Ministers stated that Russia remains the most significant and enduring threat to Euro-Atlantic security, citing its war in Ukraine and ongoing hybrid attacks. They emphasised that these challenges have reinforced Allied unity and resolve to enhance collective defence through a comprehensive approach addressing threats from all directions.
The group committed to greater European responsibility for security while maintaining close coordination with the United States and all NATO Allies. They highlighted ongoing efforts to implement commitments made in The Hague and Ankara, including modernising forces and capabilities through enhanced defence-industrial cooperation based on standardised requirements.
The ministers underscored the importance of strengthening NATO’s collective defence posture, including a more proactive deterrence and defence strategy. They pledged to bolster contributions to readiness, resilience and cross-domain response capabilities, aligning with NATO-agreed priorities and targets through complementary capabilities.
They commended the European Union’s role in supporting nations to meet NATO’s defence capability requirements and stressed that EU initiatives should complement NATO efforts without duplication. The E5 also reaffirmed support for Ukraine, including tackling Russia’s shadow fleet activities and contributing to future security guarantees once a ceasefire or peace agreement is reached.
