UK government response to agreement between US and Russia: 9 October
The UK reaffirms unwavering support for Ukraine, condemning Russia’s refusal of ceasefires and attacks on civilians, and pledges continued military and financial assistance alongside international partners.
The United Kingdom has restated its firm commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defence against Russian aggression. Officials emphasised that Ukraine has consistently pursued peace efforts, while Russia has repeatedly rejected ceasefire proposals and intensified strikes on civilian infrastructure and energy facilities. The government stressed that Russia holds the sole power to end the conflict immediately by ceasing hostilities. This position underscores the UK’s alignment with international partners in addressing the ongoing crisis.
The UK government highlighted its ongoing collaboration with allies to provide Ukraine with necessary military equipment and financial aid. This support is framed as essential to Ukraine’s ability to sustain its defence and protect its population. The statement reiterated that the UK remains dedicated to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting any territorial concessions. The government also noted that humanitarian and economic assistance will continue to be prioritised alongside military support.
Russia’s rejection of ceasefire initiatives, including partial truces, was cited as evidence of its unwillingness to engage in meaningful peace negotiations. The UK condemned the continued targeting of Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure, describing these actions as violations of international law. Officials reiterated that the international community will hold Russia accountable for its actions and the humanitarian consequences of the war.
The UK’s stance reflects a broader strategy to isolate Russia diplomatically while reinforcing Ukraine’s resilience through sustained support. The government confirmed that coordination with partners, including NATO and EU members, will remain central to this approach. It also emphasised the importance of a negotiated peace, though stressed that such an outcome depends entirely on Russia’s willingness to comply with international norms and cease hostilities.
