A passenger train had a near miss with a telehandler at Hopperton Old Station user worked crossing in North Yorkshire at approximately 08:26 on 27 August 2026. No injuries or damage were reported, though a collision was narrowly avoided. The crossing is equipped with gates and telephones on both sides, with signs instructing vehicle users to contact the signaller before crossing.
The telehandler driver had contacted the signaller and obtained permission to use the crossing before the incident occurred, according to evidence gathered by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB). The crossing’s procedure requires users to call the signaller and receive explicit permission before opening the gates and proceeding across the railway.
RAIB conducted a preliminary examination of the circumstances surrounding the near miss. The investigation assessed available evidence, including witness statements and crossing records, to determine the sequence of events leading to the incident.
RAIB has decided to publish a safety digest detailing the findings of its preliminary examination. The safety digest will be made available on the RAIB website within the next few weeks, outlining lessons learned and any recommendations to improve crossing safety.
