Second stage of Ventnor coastline investigations begin
Ground investigations along Ventnor’s coastline begin mid-September to assess erosion risks and inform coastal defence plans, with temporary access restrictions planned.
Ground surveys for the Ventnor Coastal Defence Scheme will commence mid-September 2026, following earlier summer investigations that identified sediment blockages in drainage systems. The Environment Agency and Isle of Wight Council are leading the work to gather data on coastal conditions, infrastructure, and environmental factors. Equipment deployment will begin the week of 14 September, with active investigations expected to last three to six weeks and conclude by late November. The findings will guide future coastal defence options for the area.
The second phase includes boreholes along the seafront to collect ground samples and trial pits on the foreshore to identify hidden voids beneath the surface. Marine habitat surveys offshore using drop-down video equipment are also underway to assess underwater ecosystems within the Maritime Special Area of Conservation. This data will help engineers design defences that minimise environmental impact while addressing erosion risks. The project compound will be located near the Eastern Esplanade car park on Ventnor seafront.
Temporary access restrictions will be implemented along parts of the seafront and Bonchurch Cliffs Promenade during the investigations, primarily between late September and November 2026. Businesses, cafés, and seafront facilities will remain open, with restrictions limited to work areas and clearly signed. Weekday daytime closures are planned for part of Bonchurch Cliffs Promenade, though routes will reopen evenings and weekends where possible. Localised fencing may be installed around borehole sites.
Project team members will be available at the compound near Eastern Esplanade car park every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 2pm starting 29 September to answer questions and provide updates. Residents, businesses, and visitors are encouraged to engage directly with the team. The investigations aim to gather evidence to develop coastal defence options that reduce erosion risks and protect homes, businesses, and infrastructure in Ventnor.
