Somerset Prepared wants community award nominations

Somerset Prepared, a partnership including Somerset Council, Somerset Rivers Authority and the Environment Agency, is calling for nominations for its Community Resilience Awards. The awards recognise individuals and groups who assist their communities during emergencies, with winners receiving public recognition and vouchers for community activities. Nominations are open across two categories, and the awards will be presented at the Somerset Prepared Community Resilience Day on Wednesday 21 October at Millfield School in Street, Somerset.

The event, running from 9.15am to 4pm and themed around young people and resilience, will feature workshops, networking and equipment demonstrations. It aims to strengthen local emergency plans and initiatives, bringing together the Environment Agency, Somerset Rivers Authority and Somerset Council to support communities. The day is free to attend and designed to celebrate the contributions of volunteers who play a vital role in emergency response across Somerset.

This year’s theme highlights the importance of empowering young people to contribute to community safety, reflecting the partnership’s focus on building long-term resilience. Somerset’s emergency volunteers, including flood wardens and parish councillors, are credited with making a significant difference during crises. The partnership invites groups and individuals to nominate deserving volunteers for recognition.

Last year’s individual award was given to Chris Hillier of Oake for his work in the Wellington and Wiveliscombe Local Community Network area, while the group award went to Martock Flood Group for responding to 23 flooding incidents since January 2024. The group is also trialling a road closure pilot scheme with Somerset Council. Nominations can be submitted via an online form, and attendance at the event can be reserved through Eventbrite.
