As Civilization 7 devs Firaxis prepare to unleash the nukes, the strategy game's latest update whips out a fresh take on the classic Real Earth map
Firaxis releases Civ 7’s September update featuring a revised Real Earth map and diplomacy changes, alongside a new paid DLC featuring historical leaders and civilizations.
The September 15th update for Civilization 7 introduces version 1.5.0, featuring a refreshed True Start Location Earth map that mirrors real-world starting positions with adjustments to better accommodate multiple civilizations. Senior designer Taymoor Rehman noted the map’s northern tundra and southern ocean have been reduced to free up space, while regions like Japan and Hawaii are magnified. Navigable rivers have also been added to enhance gameplay flow.
Diplomacy mechanics receive updates allowing players to spend influence points to avoid being drawn into allies’ wars, though repeated attempts by allies may force repeated expenditures. If two allies engage in conflict, players must choose a side rather than remain neutral. The update also includes the radial ruler overlay, which clarifies tile distances for improved strategic planning.
The Hall of History paid DLC launches alongside the update, introducing two new leaders—Elizabeth I of England and George Washington of the U.S.—along with three new civilizations: England, Babylon, and the Gauls. These additions expand roster options for players seeking historical roleplay.
Firaxis continues development with plans for the Arc of Tomorrow update next year and the Earthrise expansion, which will introduce lunar colonization mechanics. The studio emphasizes ongoing content expansion as it prepares for future updates.
