North Oxfordshire gets broadband boost four months early through Project Gigabit
Full-fibre broadband has reached 3,880 rural North Oxfordshire premises four months early through Project Gigabit, enhancing connectivity for homes and businesses in underserved villages.
Project Gigabit, a UK Government initiative, has delivered full-fibre broadband to 3,880 rural premises in North Oxfordshire, completing the rollout four months ahead of schedule. The connections, provided by supplier Gigaclear, target communities with historically poor broadband access due to their remote locations. Villages including Stratton Audley, Hanwell, Horley, Wendlebury and North Newington now benefit from faster, more reliable internet. The upgrade supports daily activities such as remote work, education, business operations and access to public services.
The new infrastructure is part of a broader effort to close the digital divide in rural areas, where gigabit-capable broadband has been slower to reach. Project Gigabit’s investment in North Oxfordshire reflects a commitment to equitable digital access across all communities. The rollout was completed collaboratively with Gigaclear, BDUK and the government, ensuring timely delivery. Residents and businesses in these areas now have improved connectivity to participate in the digital economy.
This achievement follows the Government’s announcement that Project Gigabit supports around 3,000 skilled jobs and apprenticeships in the digital infrastructure sector. The initiative aims to create career opportunities while upgrading the UK’s broadband network. The North Oxfordshire project is one of two contracts in Oxfordshire, with the second contract in South Oxfordshire still underway. Together, they represent £23.1 million in government subsidy for the region.
The completion of the North Oxfordshire rollout underscores the Government’s focus on boosting local economies and productivity through improved digital infrastructure. Faster broadband enables residents to work, study and access services more efficiently. The project aligns with the Government’s ambition to empower communities with the tools needed for growth and opportunity.
