RAF Waddington airfield set for major refurbishment in £53 million project
A £53 million refurbishment of RAF Waddington’s airfield has begun, including upgrades to taxiways, drainage, and lighting to support ISTAR operations and the Red Arrows.
The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is leading a £53 million refurbishment project at RAF Waddington, the home of the RAF’s ISTAR Force and the Red Arrows. The project, awarded to Lagan Aviation & Infrastructure Ltd with Ramboll UK providing technical services, includes refurbishing aircraft bays and taxiways, installing new drainage systems, and upgrading approach lighting. The upgrades aim to enhance the airfield’s resilience and operational reliability for Defence and NATO missions. Extensive planning has been undertaken to ensure flying operations continue throughout the works.
RAF Waddington serves as the central hub for the UK’s Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) capabilities, providing critical information to British and NATO military commanders. The airfield is also the base of the Red Arrows, the RAF’s aerobatic team. The refurbishment project is part of a broader programme of airfield infrastructure improvements across the RAF. The DIO’s Programmatic Approach is being used to coordinate delivery with industry partners, ensuring operational readiness is maintained.
The project is expected to be completed by summer 2028, with the upgrades designed to support long-term Defence operations and NATO commitments. The collaboration between the DIO, RAF units, and industry partners is central to the project’s planning and execution. The works are structured to minimise disruption to ongoing flying operations at the station. The project reflects the RAF’s commitment to investing in its operational infrastructure.
The refurbishment will enhance the airfield’s ability to support training and operational activities for Service personnel. The upgrades are intended to ensure the airfield remains capable of operating at maximum efficiency. The project is one of several airfield infrastructure initiatives currently underway within the RAF. The DIO and Air Infrastructure teams will continue to work closely with station staff and industry partners throughout the project’s duration.
