A ground-breaking ceremony marked the start of £206m infrastructure upgrades at Beacon Barracks in Stafford, aimed at preparing the site for additional Army personnel relocating from 2029. The project, delivered under the Defence Estate Optimisation Portfolio, will support the Royal Engineers, Royal Military Police, Intelligence Corps, and Joint Military Command - Centre. New infrastructure includes two Single Living Accommodation blocks with 116 bedspaces each, alongside new workspaces, a police station, storage facilities, and refurbished buildings for offices, stores, and training.

The upgrades incorporate sustainable design features such as air source heat pumps, photovoltaic systems, rainwater recovery, efficient ventilation with heat recovery, and modern lighting systems. Bovis, contracted by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, will oversee construction while delivering a social value programme, including apprenticeships and work placements to support local careers in construction. The project aligns with broader Defence estate efficiency goals.

The relocation involves transferring personnel from Chetwynd Barracks in Chilwell, and Venning and Parsons Barracks in Telford, to Beacon Barracks starting in 2029. Once vacated, the former sites will undergo redevelopment, with nearly 1,300 new homes planned at Chetwynd Barracks, the largest of the three locations. The upgrades aim to modernise facilities and improve operational effectiveness for the relocated units.

Belinda Lunn, DEO Army Programme Director, and Major Davies, Officer Commanding Stafford Support Unit, led the ground-breaking ceremony on 29 October. The investment reflects a decade-long series of upgrades at Beacon Barracks, designed to enhance personnel experience and Defence capability while ensuring efficient use of the estate.
