The United Kindgom welcomes the continued consolidation of peace and stability in the Central African Republic: UK statement at the UN Security Council
The UK told the UN Security Council that peace gains in the Central African Republic must be protected while regional spillover from Sudan’s conflict threatens stability and humanitarian access.
The United Kingdom welcomed progress in the Central African Republic, including strengthened national institutions after elections and implementation of the Political Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation. It highlighted encouraging steps in disarmament and demobilisation of combatants as critical to consolidating stability. The UK cautioned that recent escalations in the CAR, Chad, and Sudan tri-border area risk reversing hard-won gains and stressed the need to address persistent insecurity in border regions.
The UK underscored that over 416,000 people are internally displaced and around two million face food insecurity, making unimpeded humanitarian access essential. It noted that spillover from the conflict in Sudan is exacerbating regional instability and complicating peace efforts in the Central African Republic.
The UK emphasized that long-term stability depends on accountable and inclusive security sector reform in the Central African Republic, with national institutions taking greater responsibility for security. It called for sustained disarmament and demobilisation efforts, including reintegration support for former combatants to prevent re-recruitment into armed groups.
The UK commended the work of MINUSCA and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in reconfiguring the Mission and setting a clear transition pathway. It urged the Security Council to ensure any transition is gradual, conditions-based, and guided by ground realities to protect civilians and preserve stability in the Central African Republic.
