Third UK-Maldives Strategic Dialogue 2026: Joint Communiqué
The UK and Maldives concluded the Third Strategic Dialogue in London, reaffirming cooperation on security, trade, education, climate, and governance while advancing bilateral ties.
The United Kingdom and Maldives concluded the Third Strategic Dialogue in London on 17 September 2026, building on previous engagements in 2023 and 2025 to strengthen structured bilateral cooperation. Discussions covered defence, maritime security, counterterrorism, and consular matters, with the UK pledging continued support through training and technical assistance. Both countries reviewed progress in economic ties, including the UK’s suspension of tuna import tariffs, and explored opportunities in fisheries, tourism, renewable energy, and financial services.
Education and human capital development were highlighted as key pillars, with both sides noting the role of Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships in fostering people-to-people links. Tourism and cultural exchange were recognised for their contributions, with over 200,000 UK visitors to Maldives in 2025 underscoring the relationship’s strength. Climate change, marine conservation, and ocean governance were also discussed, with plans to expand collaboration ahead of COP31.
Regional and multilateral cooperation, including within the UN and Commonwealth, were addressed, with a focus on addressing challenges facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The dialogue also covered governance, judicial independence, human rights, and democratic institution-building, with the UK reaffirming support for Maldives’ efforts in these areas.
The dialogue was co-chaired by senior officials from both governments and concluded with a commitment to continue annual Strategic Dialogues to further strengthen the longstanding UK-Maldives partnership.
