This mandate will strengthen UNSMIL’s ability to advance a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process: UK statement at the UN Security Council
The UK welcomes the UN Security Council’s adoption of resolution 2835, extending UNSMIL’s mandate for 12 months to support a Libyan-led political process and elections within 24 months.
The United Kingdom has welcomed the adoption of resolution 2835 at the UN Security Council, which renews the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for a further 12 months. The UK praised Council members for their constructive engagement during negotiations on the resolution. The renewed mandate aims to strengthen UNSMIL’s role in advancing a political process led and owned by Libyans, ensuring progress toward elections.
The resolution grants the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) Bathsheba N. Tetteh a mandate to continue implementing her roadmap for Libya’s political transition. It urges Libyan parties to meet commitments under the ‘Smaller Convening’ agreement, which seeks to enable free, fair, transparent, and inclusive elections within 24 months. The text also emphasizes the reunification of Libyan institutions, including judicial, military, and security bodies.
The adopted resolution provides a framework for UNSMIL to support Libyan parties in establishing a single executive authority, while warning against actions that could undermine this effort. It underscores the importance of UNSMIL’s work on human rights and the rule of law, and calls for the full, equal, meaningful, and safe participation of women in the political process.
The UK reaffirmed its full support for UNSMIL and SRSG Tetteh’s leadership in advancing Libya’s political process. It urged all Libyan parties to honor their commitments to deliver democratic choice, economic opportunity, and security for the Libyan people.
