IP geolocation now covers more visitors at higher resolution
Vercel’s IP geolocation now provides city-level accuracy for nearly all visitors and postal-code data for 90% of traffic, with more frequent updates to reflect routing changes without requiring code changes.
Vercel has upgraded its IP geolocation service to deliver finer network granularity, resolving visitor locations at the city level for nearly all requests and providing postal-code data for 90% of traffic. The improvement means geolocation data is refreshed more frequently, ensuring accuracy as IP ranges are reassigned and network routes shift. No code or configuration changes are required to enable the enhanced geolocation capabilities across projects.
The update standardizes geolocation headers and the geolocation() helper in @vercel/functions, returning consistent fields for Vercel Functions and Routing Middleware. This ensures developers can rely on the same data structure whether processing requests in middleware or serverless functions. The change maintains backward compatibility while expanding the scope of available location details.
For users leveraging geolocation for access controls, localization, or compliance, the upgrade may result in some visitors resolving to different cities or countries. This shift is most noticeable for traffic originating from VPNs, hosting providers, or leased IP ranges, where the active network location differs from the static registry allocation.
Vercel advises verifying access rules against an IP’s active network location rather than its static registry record to account for the new granularity. Developers can review the updated request headers documentation to understand all available geolocation fields and their applications in routing and middleware workflows.
