Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy marks the franchise’s first combat-driven entry, departing from the stealth-focused gameplay of earlier titles. The game follows Sophia, introduced in 2022’s Requiem, as she navigates a sun-drenched Mediterranean setting that gradually reveals darker layers. Asobo Studio, led by producer Eric Chort, designed the combat system to emphasize speed and aggression, rewarding players for offensive play with health restoration upon kills. The title will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PC and Game Pass on August 27.
The development team chose Sophia as the protagonist to explore new gameplay mechanics while maintaining the series’ narrative depth. Chort explained that after completing Requiem, the team sought a fresh challenge beyond the Hugo and Amicia storyline. Sophia’s inclusion allowed for a more dynamic combat system, a departure from the previous games’ emphasis on stealth and survival. The shift reflects Asobo’s ambition to innovate within the franchise while retaining its emotional core.
Combat in Resonance emphasizes reactivity and agility, with Sophia wielding dual blades and tools like a grappling hook to evade and defeat enemies. The system was inspired by titles such as Ghost of Tsushima, with iterative playtesting refining mechanics like health restoration through kills. The team aimed to create a system where defensive play is viable but less rewarding, pushing players toward aggressive tactics. This design choice aligns with Sophia’s direct combat style, contrasting sharply with the cautious approach of prior protagonists.
The game’s title, Resonance, reflects dual meanings tied to both sound and emotional impact, though the name was finalized late in production. The setting contrasts bright Mediterranean landscapes with escalating darkness, mirroring the series’ signature dread. Asobo Studio’s goal is to deliver an experience that retains the emotional weight of previous entries while introducing a new combat-driven identity. The title launches August 27 across Xbox Series X|S, PC and Game Pass.
