How to use Gemini: A detailed beginner's guide
Google’s AI chatbot Gemini integrates with Google services and offers multimodal features, with free and paid tiers available.
Gemini functions as a versatile AI chatbot capable of web browsing, research, data analysis, and generating images and videos. It distinguishes itself through deep integration with Google products like Gmail and Google Drive, allowing users to search or summarize files directly within the chat interface without switching applications.
Accessing Gemini requires a Google account, with the service available at gemini.google.com via web, desktop, or mobile apps. Free usage includes basic features, while a Google AI plan priced at $4.99 per month removes message limits and unlocks the latest models for more intensive use.
Users can interact with Gemini through text, voice, or by uploading images, audio, or files from Google Drive or Photos. The platform supports advanced tools such as Deep Research, which compiles responses from hundreds of sources with citations, and Canvas, which generates standalone documents for detailed work.
Additional features include image and audio generation, screen sharing on macOS desktop apps for real-time analysis, and model switching within conversations. Voice input is supported via microphone or the mobile app’s Gemini Live mode for conversational exchanges.
