Amazon CloudWatch log Centralization now supports log group tag propagation
AWS CloudWatch Centralization now propagates log group tags from source to destination accounts, enabling consistent cost tracking, ownership identification, and compliance enforcement across centralized logs.
Amazon CloudWatch Centralization now automatically copies tags from source log groups to destination log groups created by centralization rules. This feature ensures that tags such as cost allocation, ownership, and compliance metadata are preserved when logs are aggregated from multiple AWS accounts and Regions into a single destination account. The synchronization of tags is managed through the centralization rule setup, allowing users to define how tags should be propagated or updated. This capability simplifies log management by maintaining tag consistency across distributed environments.
The introduction of tag propagation enables platform teams to retain critical metadata like Application and CostCenter tags on centralized log groups. These tags can then be used to enforce access controls via IAM conditions and to generate cost reports in AWS Cost Explorer. For example, teams can filter centralized log spend by department or project, improving financial accountability and operational oversight. The feature is designed to reduce manual tagging efforts and minimize the risk of misaligned metadata across accounts.
Tag propagation is now available in all AWS Regions where CloudWatch Centralization is supported. Users can enable this feature through the Amazon CloudWatch console, AWS CLI, or AWS SDKs by adjusting the centralization rule settings. The feature does not require additional configuration beyond the existing centralization rule setup.
AWS has not introduced new pricing for tag propagation, as it is included as part of the CloudWatch Centralization service.
