Amazon RDS for SQL Server supports Developer Edition in additional AWS regions

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) for SQL Server has expanded availability of the Developer Edition to 13 new AWS Regions, including Hong Kong, Taipei, Hyderabad, and others. This update follows the service’s existing support for SQL Server Developer Edition, which provides all Enterprise Edition capabilities without licensing fees when used for development and testing purposes. The expansion aims to improve access for developers by placing resources closer to end users, potentially lowering latency and streamlining workflows. Organizations can now deploy development environments in regions such as Milan, Spain, and Tel Aviv, aligning with regional data residency and performance needs.

The Developer Edition remains free for development and testing, with costs only incurred for the underlying AWS infrastructure, such as compute and storage. This model contrasts with production environments, which require separate licensing for SQL Server on Amazon RDS. The change does not affect pricing for other SQL Server editions or production deployments, which continue to follow standard licensing models. Developers can immediately begin using the expanded regions without additional configuration steps.
