Advancing the Royal Navy's mine-hunting capability
The UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) supported a two-day naval exercise to test mine-hunting capabilities, identifying design changes for future support vessels and informing procurement decisions.

The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) collaborated with Naval Design Partnering (NDP), the Ministry of Defence’s National Armaments Director Group, and Royal Navy stakeholders to conduct a high-profile mine countermeasures exercise. With only two weeks’ notice, Dstl mobilised its expertise to design realistic scenarios that allowed Royal Navy experts to test operational concepts under simulated conditions. The exercise focused on addressing the persistent threat posed by underwater mines, which can disrupt trade routes and endanger maritime operations. Dstl’s analysts provided specialist guidance, creating operationally relevant vignettes and real-time advice throughout the two-day table-top exercise.
Dstl’s contributions identified a critical design change required for the adoption of an offshore support vessel (OSV) design from Norway, enhancing the UK’s future mine-hunting mother ship capability. Using a large-scale 3D printed model developed by NDP, Dstl facilitated discussions on deck operations, enabling stakeholders to assess integration challenges and operational frictions before finalising costly design decisions. The exercise also generated evidence-based insights into mine-hunting performance in real-world environments, supporting informed procurement choices.
The team’s agility and technical leadership accelerated engagement among Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), Dstl, NDP, and Royal Navy stakeholders, reducing uncertainty in procurement decisions. This collaborative effort clarified operational requirements and enabled the UK to engage with the Norwegian Government from a stronger position. The proactive approach helped de-risk significant investments by ensuring decisions were guided by expert analysis and realistic modelling.
Dstl’s rapid response and technical expertise directly influenced the Royal Navy’s mine-hunting strategy, reducing risk, accelerating decision-making, and safeguarding operational effectiveness. The exercise demonstrated how Dstl’s science and innovation underpin Defence capabilities, ensuring the UK remains prepared to counter evolving maritime threats. The findings will inform future work to reduce risk and optimise expenditure in mine-hunting capabilities.
