The BMW Group is expanding its collection of anonymized image data from customer vehicles in EU member states to improve driver-assistance and active safety systems. This initiative targets new model generations equipped with the necessary sensor technology, including the BMW iX3, i3, X5, and 7 Series, as well as future models and updates. The data collection is contingent on customer consent and strictly adheres to EU data protection regulations throughout the process.
Image data will be gathered only in specific traffic situations where driver-assistance systems are actively engaged, such as emergency braking, evasive maneuvers, or lane-change interventions. The collection is event-based, limited to a maximum of 120 seconds per incident, and focuses on environmental sensor data, vehicle dynamics, and unaltered exterior camera footage relevant to system optimization.
To protect privacy, the vehicle identification number is removed immediately upon transmission to BMW’s IT backend, preventing any link to a specific vehicle. Additionally, faces and license plates of other road users in the footage are obscured before any internal review, ensuring compliance with stringent data protection requirements.
The anonymized data will be used to enhance driver-assistance systems and semi-automated driving functions through machine learning. Customers and road users will benefit from over-the-air software updates that incorporate improvements derived from this real-world data, with transparency ensured via a dedicated privacy-focused website.
