What's New in Lakeflow Designer
Databricks has expanded Lakeflow Designer with new no-code operators, enhanced existing features, and improved workflow management tools to reduce technical barriers in data preparation.
Lakeflow Designer, launched in June, enables over 3,000 customers to streamline data governance and reduce costs by replacing legacy self-service tools. The platform’s consumption-based pricing and absence of per-user licensing have allowed many users to cut no-code tooling expenses by 90%. Built within Databricks, it offers a visual, no-code, AI-native interface for data preparation and analytics, allowing analysts and domain experts to manipulate data through drag-and-drop and natural language inputs.
New no-code operators introduced include Prepare for cleaning and standardizing data, Unique for deduplication with configurable record retention, and Guardrails for embedding data quality checks. These operators address common tasks like case conversion, type conversion, and handling missing or unexpected values, with configurable workflow responses to failures. Enhanced operators such as Join now support multiple table joins and separate outputs for matched and unmatched rows, while Select allows dynamic column filtering based on patterns or formulas.
Output options have been expanded to include materialized views in Unity Catalog for downstream AI and BI use, table updates via merging or appending, and direct file exports to CSV, Excel, or JSON in Unity Catalog volumes. Operators now support parameterization, enabling configuration changes without reconfiguring workflows, and version history highlights modifications for easier review.
The canvas has been redesigned with improved visual contrast, larger connection targets, and searchable navigation for large workflows. Features like live cursor presence enhance collaboration, while version history and generated code inspection support workflow transparency and maintenance. Upcoming integration with Databricks Apps will allow non-technical users to interact with workflows through a simplified interface.
