Xbox announces Xbox Labs, a new initiative to trial emerging ideas and "new technology"
Xbox has launched Xbox Labs, a new internal team to rapidly develop and test experimental tools and features, with success measured by user engagement.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced Xbox Labs, a dedicated team of game makers, engineers and scientists tasked with quickly turning emerging ideas into playable experiences. The unit will build prototypes in public, gather user feedback, and judge success by whether more players engage or create content. Sharma cited recent AI-driven game mashups as inspiration for the initiative, though she noted the lab’s remit is not limited to AI. The spokesperson clarified that Xbox Labs does not have a mandate to use AI or any specific technology, and will adopt tools only where beneficial.
The new team formalises existing research and development efforts, including porting games to Apple silicon, exploring browser-based distribution via WebGPU, and supporting game modders. No new staff have been hired; the unit draws from existing Xbox talent. Sharma described the lab as a way to explore new technology without disrupting ongoing projects, aligning with the company’s broader product-focused strategy.
Xbox Labs will not issue product announcements and has no fixed release path; some projects may reach Xbox Insiders, while others will target different audiences. The initiative reflects Sharma’s reorganization of Xbox, which has prioritised iterative product development over new titles. Executive hires from technology backgrounds, such as Mojang CEO Maria Angelidou-Smith, underscore this shift.
Sharma emphasised that Xbox’s priorities remain unchanged, with the “4Cs” goals for 2027 still guiding the company. She framed Xbox Labs as a means to experiment with new technology while maintaining existing commitments, positioning it within a wider restructuring that includes studio closures and job losses.
