ESS Tech unveiled Bridge™, a 1.2 MWh modular sodium-ion battery energy storage system designed for utilities, data centers, and commercial customers. The platform integrates battery cells, power conversion, and management systems into a 10-foot container, offering plug-and-play installation with simple air cooling. Its modular design allows stacking up to 4.8 MWh in a 20-foot footprint, scaling for both commercial and utility-scale applications.
The Bridge system eliminates fire risks associated with thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries, removing the need for complex HVAC or liquid cooling. It supports charge and discharge profiles ranging from 1 to 16 hours, operating reliably in temperatures from -40°C to 50°C with a 20-year design life. The solution leverages abundant materials like iron, salt, and water, reducing reliance on constrained critical minerals and geopolitical sourcing risks.
ESS reports over $1 billion in early-stage customer opportunities since entering the sodium-ion market, driven by demand for safer, more resilient energy storage. The Bridge platform is positioned to meet the power needs of AI-driven data centers and critical infrastructure, offering flexibility and long-term energy security.
