Ethereum tl;dr: Meet Platåberget: Glamsterdam's (Gloas + Amsterdam) early testing ground open to public participation.
·
This upgrade comes with breaking changes for application developers.
·
Notably, any tool that relies on a hardcapped maximum gas limit (think wallets, indexers and gas estimators) will break and needs to be updated.
·
Platåberget is a short-term testnet aimed for testing changes by the community.

The upgrade includes EIP-8037, which introduces a separate state gas dimension for operations creating new state, altering the cost structure for transactions like account creation or deploying contracts.

The Ethereum Foundation announced the launch of Platåberget, a short-term public testnet designed for community testing of post-Glamsterdam Ethereum upgrades. Unlike previous devnets, Platåberget will operate for several months, providing a stable environment for experimentation before the Glamsterdam fork transitions to longer-lived testnets like Sepolia and Hoodi. The testnet features a small but publicly joinable validator set, enabling validators to test deposit workflows and infrastructure changes ahead of the mainnet upgrade.

A key focus of the Glamsterdam upgrade is gas repricing, which introduces breaking changes for application developers. Tools relying on a hardcapped maximum gas limit, such as wallets, indexers, and gas estimators, will need updates to accommodate the new pricing model. The upgrade includes EIP-8037, which introduces a separate state gas dimension for operations creating new state, altering the cost structure for transactions like account creation or deploying contracts.

The Glamsterdam fork on Platåberget is scheduled for August 20, allowing validators and developers ample time to prepare and test their systems. The Ethereum Foundation has provided resources, including a one-click network configuration tool, a faucet for testnet ETH, and container images for clients. Developers are encouraged to test their applications against Platåberget to identify potential issues before the upgrade rolls out to mainnet.

Feedback from Platåberget will inform further development, including a non-finality devnet to test consensus scenarios. Once stable, the Glamsterdam fork will proceed on Sepolia and Hoodi testnets before reaching Ethereum mainnet. Developers can track progress through the Ethereum R&D Discord, All Core Dev calls, or the Glamsterdam upgrade tracker.
