Here's how we built the Fairphone Gallery app
Fairphone launched a privacy-focused Gallery app built with open-source code, offering local media viewing without cloud dependencies or unnecessary permissions.
Fairphone introduced the Gallery app to address community demand for a simple, local media viewer rather than a cloud-based gallery. The company avoided building from scratch by partnering with an open-source developer to white-label and adapt an existing codebase. This approach prioritized usability while enabling ongoing community contributions and lean software maintenance. The collaboration focused on creating a lightweight, brand-aligned app that integrates seamlessly with Fairphone’s ecosystem.
The app enforces minimal permissions, requesting only access to photos and videos, and omits unnecessary features like complex encryption sub-features. It provides core functionality such as a timeline grid, albums view, basic editing tools, customizable themes, and a favorites list. Users can integrate the app with cloud backup services or rely on it exclusively for local media management. The design emphasizes speed, simplicity, and direct device storage access.
Fairphone Gallery operates entirely on-device, with no user accounts, analytics, or data collection. It avoids duplicating files or creating hidden copies, ensuring a minimal storage footprint. Deletions within the app are permanent and reflected directly in device storage. The app supports both new and older Fairphone models, including the Fairphone 4 and 5, which can download it via the Google Play Store.
The app is pre-installed on new Fairphone (Gen. 6) and Fairphone (Gen. 6+) devices, downloading automatically during initial setup. It reflects Fairphone’s commitment to user ownership and privacy by providing a clutter-free alternative to cloud-heavy media viewers. The release aligns with the company’s long-standing mission to offer ethical, repairable technology with transparent software practices.
