Institutional Approval Workflows Don’t Match Hyperliquid’s Speed
Hyperliquid’s onchain perpetual trading volume has surged to nearly $200 billion in 30 days, prompting institutional adoption via regulated custody providers. However, traditional multi-step approval workflows risk failing to match the DEX’s millisecond settlement speeds.
Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange, has seen its perpetual trading volume reach nearly $200 billion in the past 30 days, with an open interest exceeding $11.5 billion as of July 2025. The platform now accounts for 9.3% of global perpetual open interest, up from 6.9% in May, reflecting growing institutional interest in onchain derivatives. Custodians such as Fireblocks, BitGo, Anchorage Digital, and Copper now support Hyperliquid, enabling institutions to hold HYPE tokens and trade through trusted providers.
Institutional trading workflows, designed for slower settlement processes, struggle to keep pace with Hyperliquid’s 0.07-second block finality. Traditional approval models involve human review, risk checks, and multi-party signoffs, which can take minutes—far too slow for a market where positions can transition from safe to liquidated within seconds. On October 10, 2025, a tariff announcement triggered $6.93 billion in liquidations on Hyperliquid within 40 minutes, highlighting the urgency of matching transaction speeds to market dynamics.
To address this gap, institutions are exploring solutions such as separating custodial funds from trading capital or using unmanaged hot wallets, though these approaches introduce new risks like single points of failure or unauthorized access. The most viable fix involves pre-defining risk parameters at the wallet level, allowing automated execution without manual intervention during critical moments. This shift moves risk management from reactive approvals to proactive rule-setting, ensuring compliance and security without sacrificing speed.
The challenge for institutions is whether their custody providers can adapt approval workflows to execute at network speed while maintaining the control and security standards required for regulated capital. Providers like Fireblocks offer policy engines that encode risk rules before trading begins, enabling institutions to participate in fast-moving markets without compromising governance or oversight.
