A Memorandum of Cooperation signed in April 2026 between the Swedish National Space Agency and the U.S. FAA streamlines licensing for commercial space launches in Sweden. This agreement, combined with a Technology Safeguards Agreement, allows U.S. rockets like Alpha to operate from Sweden while protecting sensitive technology. Sweden becomes the sixth country to enter such an agreement with the U.S., reinforcing transatlantic space collaboration and regulatory alignment.

SSC Space has secured a SEK 209 million contract with the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration to launch military satellites from Esrange using Firefly’s Alpha rocket. The high-latitude location of Esrange Space Center, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, supports polar and sun-synchronous orbits critical for national security and commercial missions. The orbital launch complex at Esrange is designed to enhance Europe’s space capabilities and strategic autonomy.
