Norris denies Russell pole position in Dutch GP Qualifying

Lando Norris secured pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix with a final lap time of 1m 11.163s, narrowly defeating Mercedes’ George Russell by one-tenth of a second in a tightly contested Qualifying session. The McLaren driver capitalized on worsening weather conditions, completing one more lap as rain began to fall, while Russell’s best effort fell short despite a strong performance. Oscar Piastri rounded out the front row in P3, highlighting McLaren’s strong pace throughout the session.

The session saw multiple drivers eliminated in Q1, including Carlos Sainz, who missed Q2 by just 0.022s, and Haas’ Ollie Bearman, who was outqualified by his teammate. Nico Hulkenberg led Audi in P13, while Williams’ Alex Albon advanced to Q2 alongside Alpine’s Franco Colapinto. The Sprint Qualifying results earlier in the day suggested tight competition, with less than a tenth separating the top four drivers, reinforcing the importance of track position for the Grand Prix.

Qualifying began with Racing Bulls’ reserve driver Kimi Antonelli briefly leading before being overtaken by Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and McLaren’s Norris. The first runs saw Hamilton set a 1m 13.406s lap, nearly two seconds slower than Sprint Qualifying times, while Norris and Piastri quickly rose to the top. Russell secured P2 early, but the session’s final minutes were disrupted by worsening track conditions as rain approached.

With five minutes remaining, Russell made a late push but was unable to surpass Norris, who improved his time to claim pole. The rain’s arrival forced drivers to gamble on slick tyres, but Norris’ final lap held firm. The session concluded with Norris on pole, Russell in P2, and Antonelli completing the front row, setting the stage for a competitive Grand Prix under challenging weather conditions.
