Bethesda boss confirms Obsidian will remain a "distinct" team
Bethesda’s Jill Braff confirms Obsidian Entertainment will stay a separate team under its existing leadership after Xbox’s studio reorganization.
Bethesda boss Jill Braff sent a company-wide memo to staff confirming Obsidian Entertainment will remain a distinct studio under its current leadership. The reassurance follows Xbox’s September 22 reorganization, which included restructuring internal studios and transferring ownership of certain franchises. Braff described the move as a change in reporting lines rather than a shift in creative direction. She emphasized that Obsidian’s creative identity and strengths will remain central to the studio’s operations.
Braff highlighted her six-year familiarity with Obsidian’s leadership, particularly Feargus Urquhart, praising the studio’s talent and history of creating memorable games. She noted that Obsidian will continue to report directly to her while maintaining its autonomy. The memo underscored Bethesda Game Studios’ ongoing leadership of the Fallout franchise and ongoing collaboration between the two studios.
The reorganization aligns with a franchise-led model, with clear accountability for both studios and their respective franchises. Braff stressed that current priorities and roadmaps will not be reset, and teams will continue focusing on their established goals. She acknowledged potential questions from employees about how the changes might affect their work and pledged ongoing communication as the process unfolds.
Braff concluded by expressing her anticipation of working more closely with Obsidian while building on the existing strong relationships across Bethesda’s organizations. She reiterated that the changes are structural rather than creative, aiming to support collaboration without disrupting ongoing projects or team responsibilities.
