Sony introduces AI upscaling to base PS5; Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are first games to implement new tech
Sony has added AI upscaling called Quick Spectral Super Resolution to the base PlayStation 5, enabling improved visuals and performance for supported games.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI upscaling technology designed for the base PlayStation 5. Developed in collaboration with AMD, QSSR uses a streamlined neural network and hardware optimizations to enhance image quality and frame rates. The technology is positioned as a more accessible alternative to the PS5 Pro’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).
QSSR is described as a drop-in replacement for games already supporting PSSR, though developers may need a few days to tune settings such as streaming configurations. Sony emphasizes that the technology leverages FP16 math and hardware features like packed math instructions to maximize efficiency on the base PS5.
The first titles to implement QSSR are Marvel’s Wolverine by Insomniac Games and Ghost of Yōtei by Sucker Punch Productions. Developers highlight the technology’s ability to improve fine details and temporal stability in visuals.
Sony’s principal engineer for graphics R&D, Daniel Craig, noted that QSSR enables better-looking games on the base PS5, even late in the console’s lifecycle. The technology aims to bridge the visual gap between the base PS5 and PS5 Pro.
