AI upscaling is coming to PS5
PlayStation introduces Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI upscaling feature for PS5 that enhances image detail and stability, debuting in Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
PlayStation has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaling library designed to improve image quality on the PS5 console. Developed through Project Amethyst, a collaboration with AMD, QSSR addresses the computational limitations that previously prevented such enhancements on PS5. The technology analyzes game images pixel by pixel, using AI to deliver sharper visuals and greater stability compared to traditional upscaling methods.
QSSR is positioned as a performance-focused evolution of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which remains the premium option on PS5 Pro. While PSSR sets the benchmark for image quality, QSSR brings comparable benefits to PS5 by enhancing detail and reducing visual instability. The first games to implement QSSR are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, both receiving updates today to include the feature as an additional graphics option.
Insomniac Games, developers of Marvel’s Wolverine, highlighted QSSR’s impact on environmental clarity, particularly in dense urban areas like Madripoor and Shinjuku. The studio emphasized that the technology adds pixel-level precision, improving visual fidelity without compromising performance. Sucker Punch Productions, creators of Ghost of Yōtei, noted QSSR’s ability to resolve fine details in characters and environments while maintaining temporal stability, a first for PS5.
PlayStation plans to make QSSR available to all developers, expanding its use across future titles. The company views this as a step toward bridging the image quality gap between PS5 and PS5 Pro, offering players a more refined visual experience without requiring hardware upgrades.
