Sucker Punch Productions, the developer behind Ghost of Yōtei, has reportedly laid off 24 employees. An internal email obtained by Aftermath stated the decision followed careful review of market challenges and team requirements for the studio’s next project. The email acknowledged the impact on staff, noting the company did not make the decision lightly and aimed to support affected colleagues during the transition. Sony Interactive Entertainment has been contacted for comment regarding the layoffs.

The layoffs come after Ghost of Yōtei’s strong commercial performance since its October launch. The game sold 3.3 million copies in its first month, surpassing the sales of Ghost of Tsushima during the same period. According to GSD data, it became Sony’s largest first-party PlayStation launch in Europe, contributing significantly to the company’s Q3 results.

Sony reported a 6% increase in digital game and add-on content revenue to $4.8 billion for the quarter, partly attributed to Ghost of Yōtei’s success. The developer has continued expanding the game’s content, including a multiplayer mode released in March and a Complete Edition with a single-player narrative expansion launched this month.

The internal email indicated that further details about the studio’s future plans would be shared the following week. The layoffs reflect broader adjustments in the gaming industry as developers navigate market pressures and project priorities. Sucker Punch has not publicly commented beyond the internal communication.
