Minister Anand concludes trip to Benin and Côte d’Ivoire to strengthen Canada’s partnerships in West Africa
Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand concluded a three-day visit to Benin and Côte d’Ivoire, announcing $85.4 million in new investments to support economic growth, security and gender equality in West Africa.
Minister Anand’s trip from August 4 to 6, 2026, included the opening of Canada’s new embassy in Cotonou, Benin, marking a step toward stronger diplomatic engagement in West Africa. Discussions focused on regional security, sustainable development and mutual prosperity, with $17 million allocated to seven projects addressing women’s empowerment, school meals, energy access and border security. A bilateral consultation mechanism was also established to formalize future cooperation.
In Benin, Anand visited the Port Autonome de Cotonou to assess the impact of a $26-million Canadian loan supporting its modernization, part of a $316-million project integrating climate resilience. The funding aims to improve infrastructure while reducing environmental risks, aligning with Benin’s development priorities and Canada’s Africa Strategy.
In Côte d’Ivoire, Anand met Vice President Tiémoko Meyliet Koné to discuss trade, economic cooperation and regional stability. Canada pledged $68.4 million in financing, including a $65-million loan to NSIA Banque Côte d’Ivoire to support small businesses, alongside funds for inclusive finance, school feeding programs and counter-terrorism training.
The visit concluded with the signing of a bilateral consultation mechanism in Côte d’Ivoire and the announcement of negotiations to expand the Air Transport Agreement, intended to strengthen commercial and travel links. These measures reflect Canada’s strategic focus on fostering economic resilience and long-term partnerships across West Africa.
