Minister Anand meets with Vice President of Côte d’Ivoire
Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand met Côte d’Ivoire’s Vice President Tiémoko Meyliet Koné in Abidjan to discuss trade, development, and regional stability, reaffirming bilateral cooperation ahead of Côte d’Ivoire’s Independence Day.
Minister Anand and Vice President Koné met in Abidjan to address bilateral trade, economic partnerships, sustainable development, and regional peace in West Africa. Anand congratulated Côte d’Ivoire on its upcoming 66th Independence Day and highlighted Canada’s long-standing partnership with the country. She emphasized mutual economic interests, democratic values, and inclusive growth as foundations for deepening collaboration between the two nations.
The discussions covered pressing regional challenges, including peacebuilding, security cooperation, and democratic resilience in West Africa and the Sahel. Anand and Koné explored ways to support Côte d’Ivoire’s National Development Plan 2026–2030 through partnerships leveraging Canadian expertise, technology, and investment. They also reviewed opportunities to strengthen economic ties and address shared priorities in governance and regional stability.
Anand reiterated Canada’s commitment to its Africa Strategy, which aims to enhance economic cooperation, peace and security partnerships, and engagement with African diaspora communities. She underscored Canada’s focus on international assistance investments that promote economic development and youth employment in the region. The strategy aligns with efforts to support locally led initiatives that advance security and stability in Côte d’Ivoire and beyond.
Anand concluded by reaffirming Canada’s strong friendship with Côte d’Ivoire and its dedication to fostering long-term prosperity and security across Africa. She highlighted ongoing support for human rights, gender equality, and economic opportunities for women and youth, including renewed backing for the International Academy for Counter-Terrorism.
