Minister Anand meets with Haiti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Religious Affairs
Canada pledged $25.4 million to bolster Haiti’s security, governance and resilience during a meeting between ministers at the UN General Assembly.
Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, met Haiti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Religious Affairs, Raina Forbin, in New York during the UN General Assembly High-Level Week. The discussion focused on Canada’s new $25.4 million funding package aimed at strengthening security, governance and community resilience in Haiti. The funding targets efforts to combat corruption and organized crime, prevent youth recruitment by gangs and support local peacebuilding initiatives.
Minister Anand emphasized Canada’s priority to restore security in Haiti, including through strengthening detention capacity and advancing disarmament, demobilization and reintegration programs. The ministers also addressed Haiti’s electoral preparations, stressing the need for credible and inclusive elections to support stability and democratic processes.
Discussions covered justice system reforms to enhance accountability, address impunity and rebuild public trust in Haitian state institutions. Minister Anand reiterated Canada’s ongoing commitment to Haiti’s security, stability and recovery, highlighting over $570 million in international assistance since 2022.
The meeting also addressed Canada’s $126 million contribution to the multinational security mission in Haiti, reinforcing collaborative efforts to address the country’s multifaceted challenges. Both ministers underscored the importance of sustained international support to address Haiti’s immediate and long-term needs.
