Minister Anand to travel to Benin and Côte d’Ivoire to strengthen Canada’s partnerships in West Africa

Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand will visit Benin and Côte d’Ivoire from August 4 to 6, 2026, to meet government officials and private sector leaders. Discussions in Benin will focus on trade diversification, economic growth, regional security and gender equality, while exploring opportunities for deeper bilateral cooperation within La Francophonie. The visit aims to identify shared priorities and strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.

In Côte d’Ivoire, Anand will meet with senior government representatives to advance the strategic partnership, including cooperation on peace, security and sustainable development. The visit highlights Côte d’Ivoire’s role as a key partner in promoting stability and prosperity in West Africa and its collaboration in multilateral forums such as La Francophonie.

During the trip, Anand will engage with private sector leaders in both countries to promote trade, investment and commercial collaboration. The visit reflects Canada’s commitment to building long-term partnerships across Africa under its Africa Strategy, which supports inclusive growth and regional stability.

Canada and Benin established diplomatic relations in 1962, with cooperation spanning development, trade and multilateral engagement. Canada’s Office in Benin will be upgraded to an embassy, reflecting the government’s commitment to strengthen its presence on the continent. In 2024-2025, Canada provided over $49.2 million in development assistance to Benin, focusing on gender equality, youth employability and climate-resilient agriculture.
