Google announced that over 400 news organizations worldwide are now part of its News AI pilot program, which launched last year to support publishers adapting to changing reader habits and technology. The program includes a mix of global outlets like Axios, CNN, The Financial Times, and Forbes, as well as local publishers such as Post and Courier, Texas Tribune, and Shaw Media. Participants are paid to provide enhanced content that Google uses to develop AI-driven features. These features aim to improve how readers discover and engage with news by offering context and accessibility options.

The pilot program enables Google to license content from participating publications, which is then used to create AI-powered features on its platforms. Examples include in-depth article overviews on Google News publisher pages, designed to give readers helpful context before clicking through to the full article. Customizable audio briefings are also being developed, allowing listeners to consume news summaries tailored to their preferences.

Google emphasized that all AI-generated features include clear attribution and direct links to the original sources, ensuring readers can easily connect with the publications they trust. The company stated that these features are intended to build new pathways for engagement between readers and newsrooms. The program reflects Google’s effort to support journalism amid shifts in how people consume news.

The expansion follows the program’s initial launch with a smaller group of partners, including The Washington Examiner and The Washington Post. Google did not disclose the financial terms of the licensing agreements but noted that payments are made to participating publications for the delivery and use of their content in AI features.
