Google introduced SynthID in 2023 to embed imperceptible watermarks in AI-generated images, video, and audio, enabling users to identify synthetic content. The technology has since watermarked over 180 billion images and videos, alongside 240,000 years of audio. This initiative aimed to provide transparency about media origins as AI tools became more accessible.

Last year, Google launched an early version of the SynthID Detector, designed primarily for media professionals to verify AI-generated content. The tool analyzes watermarks to confirm whether media was produced by Google or its partners, including OpenAI, NVIDIA, Kakao, and soon Apple. Its expansion now makes this capability available to the general public globally in English.

The new SynthID Detector joins existing verification features in Google Search, the Gemini app, and Chrome, which collectively process over 1 million requests daily. These tools collectively aim to help users assess the authenticity of online media by providing clear, actionable context about its origins.

Google emphasizes that this expansion is part of a broader effort to equip users with tools for navigating online content with greater confidence. By integrating verification features across multiple platforms, the company seeks to address concerns about misinformation and synthetic media proliferation.
