The UN System Data Commons launches as an open, AI-ready platform integrating global statistics from UN agencies into a single searchable resource to streamline analysis and policy-making.
Every year, UN agencies compile high-integrity data to address global challenges, but these statistics have historically been scattered across siloed systems in conflicting formats. This fragmentation forced analysts to spend months manually reconciling datasets before any analysis could begin. The new UN System Data Commons, built on Google’s Data Commons, unites these datasets into a single interconnected AI-ready knowledge graph, eliminating the need for time-consuming manual work.
The platform automatically integrates metrics, timelines, and geographic boundaries, allowing analysts to focus on identifying trends rather than formatting spreadsheets. It uses AI to enable natural-language searches, letting users—from journalists to policy analysts—query data in plain language and receive instant, interactive visualizations. The Explore tab further simplifies browsing by allowing filters for location or themes like health or education.
All datasets are validated by UN statisticians and technical experts, ensuring answers are grounded in trusted, official facts. The platform also introduces AI assistant capabilities, allowing users to prompt an AI to autonomously fetch and synthesize data into charts, graphs, or draft reports, reducing manual research time.
The UN system plans to expand the platform by adding datasets from more entities, aiming to include 80% of UN statistical datasets by 2027. The project is supported by Google.org through the UN Foundation and emphasizes accessibility for researchers, leaders, and the public to track global progress in real time.
