Making your Pixel devices last longer through design, repair, and reuse
Google outlines steps to extend Pixel and Fitbit device lifespans through modular design, accessible repairs, and a growing refurbished program.
Google is integrating modular components into its Pixel smartwatch and Fitbit trackers to simplify repairs and reduce electronic waste. Users can now access device health checks, troubleshooting guides, and repair initiation through the My Pixel app and updated support hubs. The company emphasizes designing products that prioritize repairability over disposability, aiming to keep devices in use longer.
The Pixel Watch 4 and 5 feature a modular architecture that avoids heavily glued components, earning a 9 out of 10 repairability score from iFixit. This week, Google introduced the Fitbit Edge, its first repairable fitness tracker, designed with internal modular parts and a replaceable battery to extend device longevity.
Google’s Certified Refurbished program now includes the Pixel 9 series in the U.S. at up to 45% off, with devices restored using genuine parts and backed by a one-year warranty. The program has also launched in Japan this October, offering certified refurbished devices through the Google Store Online.
The company highlights its global network of walk-in repair centers and support resources, including AI-powered troubleshooting, to make repairs more accessible. Google frames these efforts as part of a broader push toward circularity, reducing e-waste by maximizing hardware lifespan and encouraging sustainable upgrades.
