New experts join Google’s AI & Economy team
Google expands its AI & Economy Research Program with Nobel Laureate Philippe Aghion and leading economists to study AI’s impact on jobs, productivity, and global adoption through new leadership and open-access data.
Google has expanded its AI & Economy Research Program by appointing Nobel Laureate Philippe Aghion, Professor Ajay Agrawal, and other leading researchers to deepen the study of AI’s economic effects worldwide. The initiative aims to track AI’s influence on jobs, productivity, and global adoption patterns, with new directors Anu Madgavkar and Daniel Rock leading the effort. Their work will focus on labor market shifts, enterprise growth, and policy-relevant insights, with findings published on ai.google/economy.
The program introduces the AI & Economy ATLAS v1.0, an interactive open-access platform tracking real-time usage of Google’s AI tools in workplaces and daily life. This tool measures adoption patterns to help organizations, workers, and policymakers understand AI’s evolving role. The research emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach, combining fine-grained data with economic analysis to guide decision-making during technological transitions.
Google’s expanded team includes academic advisors and visiting fellows to collaborate with industry leaders and policymakers. The program’s leadership now features Anu Madgavkar, Daniel Rock, Alex Imas, and Zanna Iscenko, who will oversee empirical projects and integrate insights across the research agenda. Their goal is to identify practices and policies that ensure AI benefits workers and businesses equitably.
The initiative seeks to maximize AI’s economic potential while addressing potential disruptions through sustained partnerships. Researchers will focus on organizational practices, public policy frameworks, and training programs to upskill workers and democratize expertise. Findings and data are available on ai.google/economy, with updates planned for future ATLAS releases.
