Google Public Sector and the State University of New York (SUNY) unveiled the SUNY AI Platform, a secure AI and high-performance computing environment built on Google Cloud with Gemini Enterprise. The platform is initially available at nine of SUNY’s most research-intensive campuses, aiming to help researchers transition from hypothesis to discovery more rapidly. It integrates storage, advanced computing, and over 200 AI models into a centralized ecosystem designed to simplify data analysis and foster cross-institutional collaboration.

The collaboration addresses challenges such as improving weather prediction, detecting water quality issues, sequencing DNA for cancer treatments, and processing high-resolution brain scans. By providing a common foundation, the platform eliminates the need for individual teams to independently assemble these capabilities, while ensuring consistent governance and responsible AI practices across institutions.

SUNY is offering system-wide access to Google’s self-paced AI credentials at no cost to students and faculty, with each course taking 5-10 hours to complete and requiring no prior experience. These credentials focus on practical skills like writing effective prompts, solving complex problems, and using AI tools responsibly, helping learners build job-ready technical capabilities.

The initiative also includes embedding Google Career Certificates into academic programs, allowing students to graduate with technical skills alongside their degrees. To access free AI learning tools and resources, users can visit suny.edu/google, and a partnership video featuring SUNY’s Director of Research Data Strategy highlights the platform’s impact on education and public sector transformation.
