Welcome to Gemini at Work 2026: Introducing the Gemini agent
Google Cloud introduces the Gemini agent, a unified AI assistant for work that plans, executes, and delivers tasks across documents, code, and communications while integrating with existing enterprise systems and enforcing security controls.
Google Cloud has announced the Gemini agent, a single AI assistant designed to handle knowledge work, answer questions, create content, and write or run code from a unified prompt box. The agent operates directly within Google Workspace applications such as Gmail, Drive, Docs, and Sheets, as well as third-party tools like Microsoft 365 and Slack. It maintains consistent memory and context across devices and channels, allowing users to delegate tasks that continue running even after closing their devices. The agent is positioned as a personal assistant or team member, capable of scheduling tasks, responding to events, and coordinating workflows autonomously.
The Gemini agent includes built-in cost controls, such as multi-model orchestration and real-time spend caps, to optimize expenses while selecting the most suitable model for each task. It supports dynamic creation of sub-agents for multi-step projects and offers persistent coworker agents with dedicated identities and access permissions. Security and governance features include identity management, authorization controls, secure sandboxing, and network gateways to align with enterprise policies. The agent also provides industry-specific tools and connectors for sectors like financial services and legal teams.
Gemini integrates with a wide range of enterprise systems, including collaboration tools like Confluence, Microsoft Teams, and Slack; development platforms such as Git and Jira; enterprise software like Salesforce and ServiceNow; and databases including BigQuery, Databricks, and Snowflake. It supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for secure connections to external servers and offers an enterprise tools registry for teams to build and share custom tools. Skills, stored as modular prompts, enable the agent to perform reusable, multi-step tasks, with a global library of skills and a company-specific registry for custom workflows.
The announcement highlights Google Cloud’s scale in AI adoption, noting that nearly 80% of Google Cloud customers and 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise. The company reports that nearly 500 customers each processed over one trillion tokens in the past year, indicating widespread enterprise reliance on AI. The Gemini agent is positioned as a solution for organizations moving beyond experimentation to operationalize AI in their core business processes.
