Google DeepMind announced leadership restructuring to accelerate artificial general intelligence (AGI) research and maintain momentum in AI development. Demis Hassabis will transition to Chair of Google DeepMind (GDM) and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, focusing on AGI strategy while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs. The move aims to centralize oversight of AGI initiatives under Hassabis, who has emphasized the proximity of AGI in recent statements.

Koray Kavukcuoglu, current Chief Technology Officer of GDM, will assume the role of Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind, reporting directly to CEO Sundar Pichai. Kavukcuoglu will oversee Gemini model development, Frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. His appointment reflects Google’s commitment to maintaining leadership in AI innovation, building on his 13-year tenure at DeepMind, which includes contributions to breakthroughs like WaveNet and DQN.

Jeff Dean, a 27-year veteran at Google, will depart to launch an independent public benefit corporation focused on advancing machine learning, science, and engineering discoveries. Dean and Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat will lead the new entity, which will collaborate with Google Cloud as a founding investor and partner. The initiative aims to accelerate foundational research outside Google’s core operations while maintaining ties to the company’s infrastructure and ML systems.
