Inside the Robot-Run Farm Feeding Singapore’s Families in Need

Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) operates a fully automated indoor farm above its robotics-driven production lines, using climate control and precision robotics to grow leafy greens without soil. The facility’s Smart Farm is designed to demonstrate how advanced manufacturing technology can address local food needs, even on a small scale. Visitors are often surprised to learn the entire process is automated, with sensors and robots managing conditions without human intervention.

Since October 2024, HMGICS has partnered with The Food Bank Singapore to donate a portion of the farm’s harvest to households facing food insecurity. The donated vegetables are collected weekly by a refrigerated food truck and transported to a Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities distribution center to maintain a continuous cold chain. The initiative aims to provide fresh, locally grown produce to families who may otherwise have limited access to nutritious food.

The partnership has distributed roughly a ton of vegetables to families in need within under a year, according to figures provided by HMGICS and The Food Bank Singapore. Beneficiaries have expressed appreciation for receiving fresh produce grown in Singapore, highlighting the practical impact of the donations. Volunteers and center managers describe the initiative as a meaningful contribution to community well-being.

While the Smart Farm does not resolve Singapore’s reliance on food imports, it serves as a proof of concept for growing food reliably and sustainably in urban environments. HMGICS frames the initiative as an effort to apply its technology for tangible community value, integrating innovation with social impact. The project reflects a broader commitment at HMGICS to connect advanced manufacturing with local needs.
